I hope everyone had a safe and Merry Christmas.
In our last post I reflected about the great year we had, as an association, in 2017; I again want to thank you for making this possible.
Let’s talk about 2018, what our association can continue doing in support of the men and women of law enforcement, and to help our great city reach the goal of being, “The safest city in America with respect to all.”
Association membership – In our inaugural year, we had over 100 members join; now it’s time for many to renew memberships. While some may hesitate to renew because, “there was no time to participate in events,” please know your membership extends much further. While we would love to have all members actively participate, it’s understood many have full time jobs and family commitments which make it a challenge to attend. Please know your $20.00 or $50.00, tax-deductible paid membership dues are the primary source of funding for our association. This contribution allows us to buy food, cakes, treats, and other items we provide at events in which we participate to directly support our men and women of law enforcement. If you have not yet renewed, please do so by downloading an application from our website, or if you know someone that has not yet renewed please encourage them to do so. Your tax-deductible membership contribution and completed application may be mailed to 1251 Virginia Street, Mobile, Alabama 36604.
Tax-Exempt Status – You may have noticed I stated membership dues are tax-deductible. Yes, we finally received our tax-exempt status from the IRS which means all membership dues and any donations made to the Mobile Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association (MCPAAA) may be deducted from individual or business income taxes. If you own, work at, or know of a local business interested in financially supporting the MCPAAA, please contact any member of the board so we may reach out to provide specifics. Board member contact information may be found on our association website (www.mcpaaa.com).
MCPAAA Committees – Sign up to be on an association committee. That’s right, we are seeking members willing to commit to serve on our Board of Directors and/or on one or more newly formed association committees. Opportunities include: Nominating and Election Committee, Fund Raising Committee, Newsletter Committee, Membership Committee, Special Projects Committee, Website Committee and Merchandise Committee. Each committee and its description can be found in the “Association Bylaws,” and each committee will require a chairperson. Please advise a board member if you have any questions, etc.

January 2018 – Events in need of support:

January 6th Cathedral Square – Mobile Police Department 3rd Annual Chili Cook off to benefit the Mobile Police Foundation and Crime Prevention Unit. The public is invited to taste the best chili in the city – cooked by Mobile police officers!

This family-fun event will be held Saturday, January 6, 2018, at Cathedral Square Downtown Mobile, 300 Conti Street. Teams of police officers will compete against each other with their best chili recipes.

The MPD Chili Cook-Off is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tickets are $5 per person, free for children under 5.
The winning department will receive the trophy and bragging rights for the year.
We need 6-8 Volunteers to assist with set up, work the voting booth, assist when needed during the event and break down afterwards. Volunteers will need to be there at 8:00AM

January 11th- Law Enforcement Prayer Luncheon (20th annual luncheon): Chaplin Ed Connick is sponsoring a prayer luncheon, and has asked for assistance from MCPAAA; we need 8-10 volunteers to help with set up, serving of food, clean up and breakdown. This event is being held at Cottage Hill Baptist Church located at 4255 Cottage Hill Road. The luncheon will start at 12:00PM and will end promptly at 1:00PM. All proceeds from donations will given to Officer Jackie Tucker who was shot December 2016 in the line of duty. She will be recognized as OUR HOMETOWN HERO. Volunteers need to be there by 10:00AM.

These are the first in 2018 of many opportunities we will have to support our Mobile Police Department. I look forward to working with each of you in the new year.
